Activities for Key stage 2
Below are some ideas that you can use or adapt for your own students. Please contact us if you have any questions about these activities. Butterfly and moth survey
We have a moth trap that can be booked in advance or you can make your own. We have 3 butterfly nets available and magnifying boxes to look at your specimens before release. Warm still weather is required for this activity.

Bug hunts
- Look in different habitats at Bawdsey for mini-beasts (Bug hunt - PDF)
- Set traps the night before to see what mini-beasts you will find in different habitats (Bug traps - PDF)
- The importance of invertebrates
Ladybird survey (Not suitable in the winter)
- Survey the ladybirds at Bawdsey. Look for the non-native Harlequin species that are competing with our native ladybirds (Ladybird survey - PDF)

Looking at animals and plants
- A great activity for exploring the site. Students can choose animals and plants to examine more closely (Looking at animals and plants - PDF)
- Walk around the site to look at the animals. Get students to choose an animal found at Bawdsey and to fill out a fact file. This document includes a student sheet and teachers notes (Animal walk - PDF)
Trees

- Trees and plants can still be investigated in winter, here is a lesson plan for students to think about and investigate what happens to trees and animals in winter (Winter observations: trees and animal life - PDF)
Seeds
Bawdsey has a vegetable garden that is managed organically and provides lots of opportunity to investigate plants, seed dispersal and life cycles.
- Students can investigate the plants grown in the garden and the place they have in food chains (Edible plants and food chains - PDF)
- The life cycle of seeds: Students can collect and plant their own seeds. This is a great Autumn activity that can be conducted around the site and in the garden (Life cycle, seeds - PDF).
Foodwebs
- There is wide diversity of plants and wildlife at Bawdsey. This activity idea will get students to think about how all living things are connected (Design a food web - PDF). This is a good indoor activity if the weather is not co-operating.
Extra-curriculum
- Helping in the organic garden: This can be arranged in advance, students can help with planting, weeding and picking fruit and vegetables from our working garden that provides food for our kitchen.
- Scavenger hunts (Beach scavenger hunt - PDF)
- Crabbing: there are plenty of crabs to catch off the quay at Bawdsey. Crabbing kits can be provided at extra cost.
- Sports: We have a large sports field, basketball court and inside sports hall for your use if you book ahead.

- Power boating on the river Deben
